Flea Collars
Online Pet Guides
Many people consider their pets a very important part of their lives. Cats and dogs alike are part of the family, with their friendly personalities, loyalty, and comforting companionship. Just like the rest of our families, we don't want to see them suffer. Unfortunately, millions of cats and dogs suffer from
painful and even potentially life threatening flea and tick infestations every year. Some cases are so bad that the animal is constantly itching and biting itself, which causes even more harm. Even worse is the fact that the fleas and ticks can be easily transmitted to humans and their homes. If this happens, the pet's owner could end up paying hundred of dollars to fumigate their home. All this discomfort can be avoided with a simple visit to the pet store to buy flea collars for their dogs and cats.

Flea collars are one of the many modern scientific wonders. Made from plastic resins and pesticides, a flea collar is easy to use and can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months. Best of all, they're non-toxic to your pets.

When purchasing a flea collar for your pet, there are 2 things to consider – does it already have fleas, and do you have small children? If they already have fleas and ticks, you will need to give your cat or dog a preliminary bath in flea and tick killing shampoo. If you don't, the flea collars will be ineffective.

If you have small children, you will need to keep the animal away from them. Children are much more sensitive to chemicals than adults, and may accidentally ingest the powder that coats the flea collar.

Flea collars work by attacking the fleas larvae, which causes them in the first place.  When fleas and ticks infest an animal or its bedding, they lay eggs. Because of this, a house pet can be infested with as many as a million fleas within a year. Flea collars nip this problem before it starts.

A mistake that many pet owners make is that they put flea collars designed for dogs on cats, and vice versa. This should never be done, because the dosage of flea killing medication is different for both of them. Flea collars designed for dogs can kill a cat, and cat collars are ineffective on a dog.

Using a flea collar is quite simple, and with its flexible and durable construction you won't need to worry about cracking or breakage.  When you remove the collar from its box, you'll find that it's usually much too long for your pet. This is to ensure that the fit can be tailored perfectly to your dog or cat. When putting the collar on your dog or cat, make sure it's not too tight and you can easily slip one finger between the animals neck and the collar. Once you buckle it, use a pair of scissors to cut off any excess length of the flea collar. Now you are ready to enjoy bonding time with your pet without having too worry about fleas and ticks.
